BAREILLY: Unable to bear the trauma of carrying on with the rest of her life without her uterus and a kidney after discovering she did not have them through an ultrasound test, a 17-year-old girl from the city burnt herself to death.
The teenager, a Class 11 student and resident of Subhash Nagar locality here, had taken ill a few months ago. Her parents took her to a doctor who advised her to get an ultrasound test conducted. After receiving the report, her family and the girl came to know that she did not have a second kidney and a uterus. From then onwards, according to her family, she went into a depression even as her parents desperately tried to alleviate her pain and fears by giving her much-needed emotional support. They also took her for treatment to some other doctors, but the teenager continued to be depressed.
On Friday, the father had gone to his native village to cast his vote in the gram pradhan election. The girl and her mother were alone in the house. In the afternoon, the teenager allegedly poured kerosene and set herself on fire. Hearing her cries, the mother rushed to the room and, along with neighbours, took the girl to the district hospital where she died from extensive burns according to inspector JP Yadav of Subhash Nagar police station, who added that the body has been sent for postmortem and a report is awaited.
Talking to TOI, former chief medical superintendent, District Women's Hospital, Dr Sneh Lata said, "It is a congenital deformity and a person affected by it would not be able to conceive without a uterus. The family should have taken the girl to a counsellor to overcome the trauma."
