Banco do Brasil, Bradesco in Citigroup venture talks: source

Brazilian lenders Banco Bradesco BBDC4.SA and Banco do Brasil (BBAS3.SA) are in talks to buy Citigroup's (C.N) stake in a credit card processing joint venture with Elavon Inc, a source with knowledge of the negotiations said on Saturday.

The acquisition could be closed next month by Bradesco and Banco do Brasil's holding company Elo Participações, the source said, asking not to be named because the discussions are confidential.

Representatives for Bradesco, Banco do Brasil and Citigroup declined to comment on the talks, which were first reported in Saturday's edition of Estado de S.Paulo. The newspaper did not say how it got the information.

Reuters reported in November that Citigroup had put the stake up for sale after Brazil's central bank said the joint venture needed more cash and the U.S. bank declined to come up with any additional funds.

Citigroup owns 49.9 percent of the Elavon do Brasil venture, which had negative equity of 195 million reais ($49 million) as of June, according to Citigroup's Brazilian financial statements, meaning the bank could lose money if it tried to sell the stake.

Bradesco and Banco do Brasil are controlling shareholders of Cielo SA (CIEL3.SA), Brazil's No. 1 card payment processor.

Who is the greatest salesperson ever?

Historical legends range from Dale Carnegie to cosmetics queen Mary Kay Ash. But today's TV viewers may be more familiar with stars of the Bravo franchise "Million Dollar Listing."

Each of the reality TV realtors sells hundreds of millions of dollars in New York and Los Angeles properties every year. But some of them began their careers with jobs that could literally make you cry.

As part of Reuters' "First Jobs" series, we asked these real estate titans about their humble beginnings and what they learned from them.

First job: Chopping onions

"I grew up in Sweden, and it was mandatory when you were in school to have a job for two weeks. Around age 12, they just send you out into the workforce, and I was assigned to a famous restaurant in Stockholm called PA & Co.

"My job was to chop onions in the kitchen. I cried a lot at the time, but I actually developed an obsession with onions: Now I can eat them like apples, and I put raw onions on everything.

"Once my grandparents came to visit, and the chef sent me out to serve them 'Wallenbergare,' which is a traditional meat dish with mashed potatoes and lingonberries. They were so proud of me.

"I still go back to that restaurant all the time, and get one of the best tables. I like to sit by the window and reminisce."

First job: Carrying bags of roof shingles

"I was a laborer for Testa Building & Remodeling in Andover, Massachusetts, and my job was to take 80-lb bags of shingles up ladders, where roofers would hammer them in. I did that for three years and made around $8 an hour, which when you're 15 is a significant amount of money.

"But my real goal in life was to be a movie star, and I always said that one day, I would come back and have them build me a $10 million house. I told the owner that all the time.

"It was such an intense experience for me. I liked that once the workday was over, it was over, and you didn't have to think about it anymore. Nowadays, my work never ends.

"There were definitely days that we hated it, but looking back, I can't imagine not having gone through it. When I meet people now who have never done manual labor, I can tell right away. They just don't know what it means to get dirty.

"My kids are so screwed. I'm going to have lots of them, and I'm going to put them all to work."

First job: Sorting mail

"When I first moved to Los Angeles from Boston, I had no money and no connections. My rollerblades were my car, and my brother's couch was my bed. I literally went around town just trying to find anything, and the only place I could get a job was in the mailroom, at a music agency called The Firm.

"I did everything from getting people's lunch, to answering phones, to delivering mail, to getting dry cleaning. All the horrible stuff. I got paid $7.50 an hour, and I'll tell you exactly what I spent it on: taking out the best agents at the company for drinks or lunch or dinner, to hear their stories of how they became a success. That's actually how I first heard about real estate, because some agents were making extra money selling houses on the side.

"When I flipped my first house and made $200,000, I kept it polite and classy: I went in to my boss' office and just said, 'Thanks for the opportunity.' That's how I quit. But I really hated my boss, and wanted to say something else."

Sex workers skip meals to raise funds for Chennai flood victims

Mumbai: Hundreds of sex workers in Maharashtra have skipped one meal daily for several days to help raise funds for the flood affected people in Chennai, a report said on Thursday.

According to CNN-IBN, sex workers in Maharashtra's Ahmadnagar district have raised about 1 lakh rupees to help the victims of the devastating floods in Chennai which happened about a month ago.

The floods, triggered by heavy rains, were attributed to the El Nino phenomenon.

Some 2,000 sex workers have pitched in for this endeavour, the report said.

The inspiring work by the sex workers have attracted a lot of praise from different quarters.

Dubai flight suffers bird-hit, airliner faces Rs 2-crore setback

The aircraft got delayed by about 15 hours after it received an almost 6-inch-long dent.

A private Gulf-based airline
was the latest victim of bird-hit incident. And the cost it paid for the freak accident was a whopping Rs 2 crore. The bird hit the carrier while it was landing at the IGI Airport in New Delhi. According to the airline, the aircraft got delayed by about 15 hours after it received an almost 6-inch-long dent. The whole process of arranging another aircraft and hotel accommodation charges, fuel charges, etc, amounted to a Rs 2-crore setback, the airline claimed.

According to an airline official, the pilot of the flight coming from Dubai to Delhi on November 24 noticed a bird hitting the right wing of the aircraft while landing. After the flight landed, the airline decided to call the manufacturer of the aircraft but after four hours, the very same flight was supposed to take 370 passengers from the Delhi airport to Dubai got cancelled due to the bird hit. According to the airline, they immediately shifted passengers to hotel and called engineers from Dubai. "We cancelled the flight as we were not sure whether we can fly the aircraft or not. We called four engineers from Dubai along with replacemnet of the part which was dented due to the bird hit. Engineers took almost 48 hours to fit the new part," a senior official of gulf based airline told Mail Today.

A special flight was called from Dubai to take the passengers to Dubai. "On November 25, the special flight carrying no passengers landed at the IGI airport and then we accommodated all passengers. But this was not the end of the issue as the flight which got the 6-inch-long dent was lying at the IGI airport," the official added.

After almost 48 hours, on November 26, engineers changed the affected part and after inspection and clearance, the aircraft carrying no passenger took off for Dubai.

Hema Upadhyay murder: Man who last called Mumbai artist is prime suspect

Mutilated bodies painter Hema Chintan Upadhyay and her advocate Harish Bhambhani were found dumped in a Kandivali drain on Saturday evening.

Mumbai Police is looking for a person named Rajbhar, who is said to be the last person artist Hema Upadhyay had spoken to before going mysteriously disappearing on Friday evening. The police is also on the lookout for a metal fabrication artist in the sensational double murder case.

Mutilated bodies painter Hema Chintan Upadhyay and her advocate Harish Bhambhani were found dumped in a Kandivali drain on Saturday evening.

Police said Hema and her advocate's last known mobile phone locations were between Charkop and Kandivli, where the bodies were found. Both phones were switched off at 8.30 pm on Friday. Hema used to store her works at a godown in Charkop. Reports say that a man named Gotu, who is the owner of the Charkop godown is the prime suspect in the case.  

According to sources, Hema and Gotu had dispute over Rs 5 lakh and this could be the motive behind the artist's murder.

Three persons, including Hema's husband Chintan Upadhyay, were detained and quizzed by the police on Sunday. Hema was going through divorce battle with her artist husband Chintan Upadhyay since 2010.

Chintan was quizzed all day Sunday. He told the police that he hadn't spoken to her recently. Bhambhani was representing Hema in a complaint of harassment she had filed against Chintan in 2013 for painting obscene sketches on the walls of their Juhu flat.

has won the contract to build India's first bullet train that will link the cities of Mumbai and Ahmedabad. According to the Indian officials, the two countries will sign a joint statement regarding the deal on Saturday, December 12. Japan earlier had a deal with Taiwan, in 2007, on exporting its bullet train technology.

The fastest passenger train in the world can run at a speed of 603 kilometres per hour. It has a previous record of running at 581 kilometres per hour.

TR-09, Germany
TR-09 has been designed for 500 kilometres per hour voyaging speed but for the safety reasons, the train is run at 450 kilometres per hour.

Shanghai Maglev, China
Shanghai Maglev has a maximum operational speed of 430 kilometres per hour and average speed of 251 kilometres per hour.

Harmony CRH380A, China
This train is designed to operate at the speed of 380 kilometres per hour while in operation and 480 kilometres per hour while it's in testing.

TGV Reseau, France
TGV Reseau can run up to 380 kilometres per hour but the approved top speed of this train is 320 kilometres per hour.

Siemens Velaro E/AVS 103, Spain
Although the train usually runs at a speed of 350 kilometres per hour but during its test trip, it achieved a whopping speed of about 400 kilometres per hour.

Talgo 350 (T350), Spain
Initially named RENFE AVE Class 10, Taglo 350 achieved a speed of 365 kilometres per hour during its trial. However, it normally runs at a speed of 350 kilometres per hour.

How to drink alcohol without ruining your health

I can't really ask you not to drink - it's almost Christmas after all - and you probably have a party to attend every night (sometimes two) where the drinks list is longer than the menu. So I won't, because you would anyway not listen. But I can show you how to minimise the damage, and also (believe me) actually manage to score some nutrients through that glass of utterly empty alcohol calories (that just go sit on the waist) with the help of some smart mixology. Follow these tips:

Remember pure alcohol is clear. Clearer the better. So whichever drink you choose (beer, wine, rum), the darker your drink, the more congeners (extra components) it contains, which can leave you feeling more hung-over the next day. Congeners affect blood vessels directly, producing migraine-like effects and intensifying a hangover. As a rule, the lighter the colour, the fewer congeners it is likely to contain (vodka and gin are better than whisky for this reason).

Alcohol reduces the kidneys' ability of holding water, so they begin putting more water into the bladder thus increasing dehydration. So it's important to down a lot of water along with your alcohol. I say alternate a glass of water, with alcohol. It will help you pace the drinks better too.

Beer belly! Need I say more? Beers are extremely high in calories - about 150 for a can of regular beer and light beers (with lesser alcohol) pack about a 100 calories per can. But invariably one ends up knocking a few more back and consuming more calories and alcohol. So be careful.

Choose your cocktails with care. For example beware of the Bloody Mary mix! If you're watching your sodium, this is not a good choice! There's just too much sodium in there. And think carefully before you pick up those popular giant-sized cocktails; they are absolutely teeming with diet-annihilating calories. Sample: a long island iced tea may have close to 800 calories in it. Yes! After all it has five different kinds of alcohol - vodka, tequila, rum, gin and triple sec, sweetened premix and cola. Margaritas and pina coladas are all upwards of 600 calories too. Totally devilish! A wine spritzer (soda and wine), mimosa (orange juice and champagne) or a sangria (fresh fruit, fruit juice, club soda and wine), on the other hand, give you only about 100 calories. Compare and drink. Also adding some fruit and fibre to your drink instead of canned juices and syrups is a good idea. This way you cut off the extra calories and add some fibre and yes nutrients too to your drink. Win-win!

Give brandy a buzz. Put a sugar cube in a mug. Fill the mug two-thirds full of boiling water and top it off with 30ml brandy. One study has actually pointed out that a shot (30ml) of brandy can give you the equivalent antioxidant potential of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C. Now I really don't know how far this is true, as there haven't really been any follow-up studies, but the study does add a bit of a halo around the spirit for sure.

Finally after the drink fest remember to replenish some of the B vitamins you've lost away drinking. Take a multivitamin, and to hydrate drink as much water as possible before going to bed; it might be unpleasant but has to be done.

To contribute towards the relief work in Chennai, sex workers in Ahmednagar district gave away money from their savings and survived on just one meal a day.

In an attempt to do their bit, sex workers from Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district shed out money from their savings and survived on just one meal a day to ensure they donate money for the ongoing relief work in flood crippled Chennai.

The sex workers in an event organised by NGO Snehalaya in Ahmednagar presented the cheque of Rs 1 lakh to District Collector Anil Kawade.

"These women were restless since the last four days, when they came to know of the deluge in Chennai. They decided they should do something to help residents there," Snehalaya founder Girish Kulkarni told PTI.

It was important for them to contribute towards the relief work because they realized that a great calamity had befallen Tamil Nadu. Out of the three thousand sex workers in the district, two thousand of them contributed to the fund.

Jiah Khan death case: Could this be a reason behind the Nishabd actor's supposed suicide?

Jiah Khan, who allegedly committed suicide in June 2013, wasn't able to cope with the 'disappointments and frustrations that the film industry is replete with'. 

Jiah Khan, who allegedly committed suicide in June 2013, was unable to cope with the 'disappointments and frustrations that the film industry is replete with', says filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. The director had introduced the Hindi film industry to Jiah Khan when he cast her in the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Nishabd. The film went on to become one of the most-talked-about films of both Ram Gopal Varma and Amitabh Bachchan's career.

In his recently-released book Guns And Thighs, Varma has revealed how Jiah was among those people who found it diffcult to deal with the frustrations that were a daily affair in an actor's life. "When I heard of her suicide, I cried uncontrollably though I was never really close to her. She was one of the few people who couldn't cope with the disappointments and frustrations the film industry is replete with," wrote Varma.

The Satya director also wrote that when he first met Jiah, he thought she was 'the most innocently sexy girl'. During the filming of Nishabd, Varma went on, everyone was convinced Jiah would be a huge star - something that never quite happened. After Nishabd, Jiah's career saw her in the Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini in 2009. Following Ghajini, there was nothing quite mentionable about Jiah's career.

Khan was found hanging in her Juhu apartment in June 2013. In the days after her death, Jiah's mother Rabia had accused her ex-boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi of having had a hand in her death. The 25-year-old Pancholi was in a relationship with Jiah Khan. In August this year, Sooraj had been quoted as saying, "My name will always be associated with her and I have no guilt for that. I am happy that something at least stays with me. I am sad that she ended her life. But at least her name is with me and I have no problems with it."

In September 2015, in an interview to India Today, the Hero actor had said, "I don't think I have changed as a person, I am the same Sooraj I was three years ago. And what happened in my life remains deep inside my heart, that I'll never let go out. It's still with the court and I'm waiting for the court to decide what to do."

Jiah Khan's death had come as a shock to the entire Hindi film industry. The actor was 26 when she died. The exact reason behind her death - which has been termed 'suicide' by many - is yet to be zeroed in on, more than two years after the incident. However, could Varma's point of view that Jiah wasn't able to cope with the 'disappointments and frustrations that the film industry is replete with' have been a reason behind her death? Guess only time will be able to tell.

Anusha Natarajan's fitting reply to an inhumane post on #ChennaiFloods is going viral

Anusha gave an apt reply to an inhuman post made by Ashish Chaudhary. Read his post and her reply here! 

Chennai city is still battling the flood caused by the torrential rains. People in Chennai are working together to ensure everyone's safety and help is flowing from across the nation as mobile recharges, food, clothing and medicine supply and monetary contributions.

Film stars are contributing generously to the Tamil Nadu CM's relief fund and coordinating relief activities like never before using social media. Amid all this, there are some who are ranting on social media and trying to spread negativity. When some try to bring in religion stating how people are helping those from other communities, there are others posting nonsense about Tamilians.

One such post made by a fellow named Ashish Chaudhary got a befitting reply from a girl, Anusha Natarajan.

Ashish, whose Facebook profile is now deactivated, posted this - "I don't mind if Tamil people die, they never considered themselves as Indians," and without stopping there, he wrote, "And then I ask myself, the land who do not accept our national language as their own language and prefer British English more in conversation to native Indians are asking for help from Hindi language people".

Anusha who came across this post gave him an apt response. Here's what she said:

"Dear Ashish Choudhary,

First of all the good news, we "Tamilians" made it alive and stronger than ever. Now the bad news, your intellect is even teenier and tinier than the size of your brain, let me explain why:

1) Hindi is not our national language, India has many officially recognized languages.

2) I see you're from Mumbai, and that means you are technically not from the northern part of India.

3) 'Hindi language people' is not a thing, not at least where you come from.

4) People from south AKA Dravidians are the real Indians, you guys are immigrants from Persia (not to hurt anyone's feelings, we love you all and will come for your rescue if and when needed).

5) So we embrace English, big deal! It helps us become CEOs of big companies around the world while you are still stuck doing something completely useless on MTV.

And finally, you are brainless. I can tell you this because while you accused us of embracing English, you typed both your posts in English. Not too sharp buddy, not too sharp!

Born without kidney, uterus, UP teen sets self afire

BAREILLY: Unable to bear the trauma of carrying on with the rest of her life without her uterus and a kidney after discovering she did not have them through an ultrasound test, a 17-year-old girl from the city burnt herself to death.
The teenager, a Class 11 student and resident of Subhash Nagar locality here, had taken ill a few months ago. Her parents took her to a doctor who advised her to get an ultrasound test conducted. After receiving the report, her family and the girl came to know that she did not have a second kidney and a uterus. From then onwards, according to her family, she went into a depression even as her parents desperately tried to alleviate her pain and fears by giving her much-needed emotional support. They also took her for treatment to some other doctors, but the teenager continued to be depressed.

On Friday, the father had gone to his native village to cast his vote in the gram pradhan election. The girl and her mother were alone in the house. In the afternoon, the teenager allegedly poured kerosene and set herself on fire. Hearing her cries, the mother rushed to the room and, along with neighbours, took the girl to the district hospital where she died from extensive burns according to inspector JP Yadav of Subhash Nagar police station, who added that the body has been sent for postmortem and a report is awaited.

Talking to TOI, former chief medical superintendent, District Women's Hospital, Dr Sneh Lata said, "It is a congenital deformity and a person affected by it would not be able to conceive without a uterus. The family should have taken the girl to a counsellor to overcome the trauma."

HYDERABAD:  Hit by financial problems, eight members of a family jumped into a reservoir in a suicide bid in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, resulting in death of five, including three minors, police said today.

S Ramaiah, a trader, jumped into the Owk reservoir in the district last evening along with his seven family members, including grandchildren, according to the police.

"Ramaiah, his younger son and his wife survived in the suicide bid, but his elder son Venkateshwarlu, his wife, besides three children (two boys and one girl), all aged below five years, drowned," Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dhone Sub-Division) Vinod Kumar said.

After getting the information about the alleged suicide bid last evening, a police team managed to rescue Ramaiah, his younger son and his wife, while during a search operation for others that lasted till this afternoon, the police retrieved the bodies of five others, the DSP said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Ramaiah was supposed to pay an amount of Rs. 50 lakh to farmers from whom he had bought bengal gram, also known as chana dal in Indian cuisine.

"The prices of bengal gram fell in the market and he was finding it difficult to pay the amount to the farmers, who reportedly pressurised him over their due amounts," the senior police officer said, adding further probe was on.
