NEW DELHI: Underworld don Chhota Rajan was brought to Delhi early this morning from Indonesia by a joint team headed by CBI officials for facing trial in various criminal cases registered against him in Delhi and Mumbai.

Immediately after his arrival here in an Indian Air Force Gulfstream-III aircraft from Indonesia's Bali, Rajan, who is considered as a 'friendly don' as he reportedly tipped Indian security agencies about the movement of Dawood and his aides, was whisked away to an undisclosed location under tight security.

Rajan had told media in Bali that he was happy to return to his motherland and had rubbished reports that his arrest was orchestrated as he was facing threat from Dawood's men.

Rajan was to have been deported on Tuesday from Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport, but the airport was closed because of volcanic ash from an eruption of Mount Rinjani on nearby Lombok island.

55-year-old Rajan was arrested in Bali upon arrival from Australia on October 25. He was carrying a passport with the alias Mohan Kumar. He was arrested on the basis of a notice from Interpol and following a tip from Australian authorities in Canberra. Rajan was handed over to seven CBI officers on Thursday evening and was flown to India on a special aircraft, an Indonesian Interpol official said.

Ahead of his return to India, Maharashtra government made a surprise announcement of handing over all the cases related to the underworld don to the CBI as the agency had expertise in handling such cases. Rajan has reportedly conveyed to Indian officials his reluctance to go to Mumbai because of threats from underworld don and terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, his former boss turned enemy.

Till the formalities of CBI to take over the Maharashtra cases are completed, Rajan will be in the custody of Special Cell of Delhi Police which has six cases registered against him.
He is likely to be formally arrested by CBI, which will be the probing agency for cases registered against him, and produced before a magistrate. Delhi Police is also likely to hand over their cases registered against Rajan and his men to CBI on Friday.Embedded image permalink
