Apple seeks nod to open single brand stores in India

The DIPP is expected to seek some more information about the proposal.

The development comes after the government relaxed the foreign direct investment (FDI) policy for single brand retailing

New Delhi: Apple, the maker of iPad and iPhone, has sought permission from the government to open single brand retail stores and also enter the e-commerce business in the country. In this context, Apple India Pvt Ltd has sent an application to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). The DIPP is expected to seek some more information about the proposal, sources said.
"The company has sought permission for single brand retailing and sell its product online also," they said adding Apple has not mentioned the amount of investment and number of stores it wants to open.
However, an e-mail query sent to Apple remained unanswered. The development comes after the government relaxed the foreign direct investment (FDI) policy for single brand retailing. The government may also relax sourcing norms for entities undertaking single brand retailing of products having 'state-of-the-art' and 'cutting edge' technology and where local sourcing is not possible. Single brand retailers are also allowed to take e-commerce route for such trading.
At present, 100 per cent FDI is permitted in the sector. But beyond 49 per cent, permission of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) is required. The company sells its products through Apple-owned retail stores in countries including China, Germany, the US, the UK and France. It has no wholly-owned store in India and sells its products through distributors such as Redington and Ingram Micro.

TRAI slams Facebook over 'diversion', company hits back

Facebook India on January 20 responded to TRAI's allegations, saying it's being singled out.

It all goes back to December 2014 when Airtel decided to charge separately for Internet-based calls

New Delhi: A day before the open house discussion on differential pricing of data, a full-scale war of words has broken out between telecom regulator TRAI and social network Facebook over the Net neutrality debate.
Terming Facebook's action as diversionary, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said the whole consultation exercise has been reduced to "a crudely majoritarian and orchestrated poll".
"Neither the spirit nor the letter of a consultative process warrants such an interpretation which, if accepted, has dangerous ramifications for policy-making in India," TRAI said in its letter to Facebook on January 18.
According to the regulator, the campaign by Facebook to defend its free Internet platform Free Basics in India is "wholly misplaced" as "the consultation paper is on differential pricing for data services and not on any particular product or service".
Facebook India on January 20 responded to TRAI's allegations, saying it's being singled out. "We would note that we are not aware of a similar request (from TRAI) having been made to any other commentator who did not answer these specific questions," it said in the reply.
"And we continue to believe that the original comments submitted were responsive to the general questions raised in the consultation paper, which clearly covers such topics as the Free Basics programme," Facebook Public Policy Director for India, South and Central Asia Ankhi Das said.
TRAI also spoke of "the self-appointed spokesmanship", in which "you have not been authorised by your users to speak on behalf of them collectively". The regulator went on to say that despite giving an opportunity to people who shared their views through the Facebook platform, "text of TRAI's communication was not in turn conveyed by you (Facebook) to those who had sent responses to TRAI using your platform".
It all goes back to December 2014 when Airtel decided to charge separately for Internet-based calls, but withdrew the plan later after facing protest. The debate heated up after Airtel launched its free Internet platform Airtel Zero and Facebook followed suit with its Internet.org, which was later rechristened as Free Basics.
TRAI has started a public consultation on whether plans or schemes allowing differential pricing of the Internet based on its usage should be allowed or not. This is the first consultation paper from TRAI which has received maximum comments -- around 24 lakh -- till January 7, the deadline which was extended from the earlier December 30.
The social network behemoth claims that the number of comments in support of Free Basics to be more than 1.35 crore as against TRAI's official figure of around 24 lakh. Facebook thinks that "someone with access to designated TRAI e-mail account appears to have blocked receipt of all e-mails from Facebook".
In a separate letter addressed to TRAI, Facebook said it found that "on December 17 at 5.51.53 GMT, an individual with access to the TRAI e-mail account designated to accept comments took action that blocked Facebook from delivering any additional e-mail". The regulator has cited a similar instance of user complaint on non-functioning of an e-mail address during the response period, which was "brought to its notice and the situation was immediately rectified".
"It is surprising that it took over 25 days for you to inform TRAI about this," TRAI said in the January 18 letter. According to TRAI Chairman R S Sharma, the regulator will firm up its views on differential pricing of data services by the end of this month.

Motorola Moto X Force to launch in India on February 1

The handset will be Motorola’s first smartphone to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset.

The device has got an expandable storage capacity of 2TB, which is one of its distinctive features.

Mumbai: A recent update suggests that Motorola will launch the Moto X Force (Motorola Droid Turbo 2) in India on February 1.
Motorola India GM Amit Boni revealed the news of the smartphone’s India launch at the Lenovo-Motorola event in Delhi. After releasing the Moto X Play, followed by the classy Moto X style, the company is now looking forward to release yet another premium-class device for the Indian Smartphone market.
One of the biggest USP’s of the device as claimed by the company is the shatterproof glass, which will not crack for a period of four years. The Moto X Force employs an ingenious ‘Moto Shattershield’ technology, which has multiple layers of glass material that helps in absorbing shocks.
The handset will be Motorola’s first smartphone to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset in 2015. The company is so sure about it’s technology that they are offering a four-year long warranty on the Moto X Force’s screen.
The Moto X Force, which is know as the Droid Turbo 2 in the US is priced at $624 for the 32GB variant and $720 for the 64GB variant. The device has got an expandable storage capacity of 2TB, which is surely one of its distinctive features.
The handset has a 21MP rear camera sensor along with a dual LED flash, and is definitely Motorola’s best camera offering by far. The device uses a 3,760mAh battery, supports fast-charging, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The Moto X Force will unfortunately run on Android Lollipop 5.1 instead of the latest Marshmallow OS.

Samsung producing world’s fastest DRAM

New DRAM is more than seven times faster than the current one’s performance limit.

Korea: Samsung Electronics announced that it has begun mass producing the industry’s first 4GB DRAM package based on the second-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) interface, for use in high performance computing (HPC), advanced graphics and network systems, as well as enterprise servers. Samsung’s new HBM solution will offer unprecedented DRAM performance – more than seven times faster than the current DRAM performance limit, allowing faster responsiveness for high-end computing tasks including parallel computing, graphics rendering and machine learning.
“By mass producing next-generation HBM2 DRAM, we can contribute much more to the rapid adoption of next-generation HPC systems by global IT companies,” said Sewon Chun, senior vice president, Memory Marketing, Samsung Electronics. “Also, in using our 3D memory technology here, we can more proactively cope with the multifaceted needs of global IT, while at the same time strengthening the foundation for future growth of the DRAM market.”
The newly introduced 4GB HBM2 DRAM, which uses Samsung’s most efficient 20-nanometer process technology and advanced HBM chip design, satisfies the need for high performance, energy efficiency, reliability and small dimensions making it well suited  for next-generation HPC systems and graphics cards.
Following Samsung’s introduction of a 128GB 3D TSV DDR4 registered dual inline memory module (RDIMM) last October, the new HBM2 DRAM marks the latest milestone in TSV (Through Silicon Via) DRAM technology.
The 4GB HBM2 package is created by stacking a buffer die at the bottom and four 8GB core dies on top. These are then vertically interconnected by TSV holes and microbumps. A single 8Gb HBM2 die contains over 5,000 TSV holes, which is more than 36 times that of a 8Gb TSV DDR4 die, offering a dramatic improvement in data transmission performance compared to typical wire-bonding based packages.
Samsung’s new DRAM package features 256GBps of bandwidth, which is double that of a HBM1 DRAM package. This is equivalent to a more than seven-fold increase over the 36GBps bandwidth of a 4Gb GDDR5 DRAM chip, which has the fastest data speed per pin (9Gbps) among currently manufactured DRAM chips. Samsung’s 4GB HBM2 also enables enhanced power efficiency by doubling the bandwidth per watt over a 4Gb-GDDR5-based solution, and embeds ECC (error-correcting code) functionality to offer high reliability.
In addition, Samsung plans to produce an 8GB HBM2 DRAM package within this year. By specifying 8GB HBM2 DRAM in graphics cards, designers will be able to enjoy a space savings of more than 95 percent, compared to using GDDR5 DRAM, offering more optimal solutions for compact devices that require high-level graphics computing capabilities.
The company will steadily increase production volume of its HBM2 DRAM over the remainder of the year to meet anticipated growth in market demand for network systems and servers. Samsung will also expand its line-up of HBM2 DRAM solutions to stay ahead in the high-performance computing market and extend its lead in premium memory production.

Not angry but disappointed, I take full responsibility: Dhoni

Dhoni not only praised the batting duo of Kohli and Dhawan but also defended the inexperienced Indian bowling attack.

Canberra: Taking full responsibility for the inexplicable collapse against Australia in the fourth cricket ODI, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday said he should have steered the team home after fluent centuries from Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli.
Chasing 349 for a win at the Manuka Oval, the visitors were sailing along at 277 for one before they lost nine wickets for 46 runs to nosedive to 323 all out in 49.2 overs. Losing the match by 25 runs, India trail the five-match series 0-4 and Dhoni was expectedly disappointed.
I am not angry, I'm disappointed. This was one game we should have batted much better. I'll take responsibility, I should have carried on but I got out. There was a bit of pressure on the youngsters. International cricket is all about pressure, you think about the right shot. You realise you have to take a bit more time and take the game slightly to the end," Dhoni said in the post-match presentation.
Dhawan (126) and Kohli (106) stitched together a 212-run second-wicket stand to put the hosts on the back foot before Kane Richardson's five-wicket haul flattened the Indian chase.
Dhoni not only praised the batting duo, but also defended the inexperienced Indian bowling attack. "Rohit batted very well with Shikhar. And Dhawan and Kohli batted majestically. In the last five years, we have not had a fixed bowling line-up other than the spinners. That pushes us to the extreme to get some extra runs," said Dhoni.
On a roll, Australia skipper Steven Smith not only praised the effort of Dhawan and Kohli, but also gave full credit to Richardson and his team's never-say-die attitude.
"It looked like they were cruising, a couple of wickets swung things. Richardson did very well as well. You have to try everything when Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan were batting, it felt like we needed 15 or 16 fielders. We had a never say die attitude tonight. When we had a sniff, we made a run for it," Smith said.
Richardson registered his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs to earn a well-deserved Man of the Match award and he was over the moon.
It's a funny old game, cricket. We always knew it would speed up once we got a wicket but we did not get it. Hastings could be up here as well. You try and bowl good balls but sometimes they go for sixes. It's our job to try and stop them," said the 24-year-old medium-pacer.

AUS vs IND, 4th ODI: India defeats itself in great batting debacle

MS Dhoni's side squanders a 212-run partnership between Dhawan and Kohli, Australia go 4-0 up in five-match series.

Canberra: Cruising at 277 for 1 in the 38th over chasing 349 to win, thanks to counter-attacking centuries by Virat Kohli (106) and Shikhar Dhawan (126) and their 212-run partnership, India lost 9 wickets for 46 runs in a spectacular batting collapse as Kane Richardson's maiden five-for scripted a turnaround of sorts for Australia's fourth victory on the trot.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Australian openers Aaron Finch and David Warner both posted big scores to take the home side to a massive 348 for eight.

The Indians looked well on target when Dhawan (126) and Kohli (106) put on 212 for the second wicket to reach 277 for one, smashing the attack all over Manuka Oval.

Neither batsman was in any trouble on a lifeless pitch and none of the Australian bowlers were spared. But once Dhawan fell cutting John Hastings to George Bailey at point, the Indian wickets began falling regularly and the Australians began to assert control.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni fell for a duck before Kohli hit a catch to Australian captain Steve Smith at mid-off, his only false shot in a magnificent 106-ball innings.
With four wickets down and in-form batsman Ajinkya Rahane hampered by split webbing on his hand, the Indians began to panic as they lost Gurkeerat Singh (5), Rahane (2) and Rishi Dhawan (9) in quick succession.
The tail enders put up little resistance and Australia took the last nine wickets for just 46 runs to wrap up an unlikely victory. "It's a funny game isn't it?" said a delighted Smith.
"It looked like they were cruising for a while there, but a couple of wickets always changes the swing of things. We had a never say die attitude tonight, which is something I want to instil in these guys.
"We worked incredibly hard to get back into that game and when we got a sniff we ran with it."
Dhoni said he took responsibility for the loss after failing to capitalise on the good start to the run chase. "That's what my job in the team is, to finish off the games from that type of position, but unfortunately I got out," he said.
"There was a bit of pressure on the youngsters but I think certainly we should have done much better. The way we started was what we needed and the partnership between Shikhar and Virat was magnificent."
Earlier, Finch made 107 and Warner 93 in a huge opening stand of 187. Smith then smashed 51 off only 29 balls and Glenn Maxwell 41 from 20 in a display of powerful shot making.
Warner brought up his 50 from 46 balls with eight fours and one six. Finch was more sedate than his partner, taking 61 balls for his half-century, but began to pick up the pace soon afterwards.
His innings was especially damaging to umpire Richard Kettleborough, who was hit on the shin by a powerful on-drive and had to be replaced in the middle by Paul Wilson.
After breaking the opening stand India took regular wickets to slow the scoring down until Maxwell let rip in the last two overs to post a target that eventually proved too much.

Nokia Lumia 925 vs HTC One vs Samsung Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5

Nokia Lumia 925 vs HTC One vs Samsung Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5

VERDICT

The Galaxy S4 is a stunning smartphone that won't let you down for a variety of tasks. It's not as good overall as the HTC One, especially when you factor in the design, but we love the S4 and would be proud to have it in our pocket.

With the advent of the Nokia Lumia 925, it's time to pit it against the big phones of the last few months.
With the exception of the iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S release date some time in 2013, we now have our mitts on the best that Android, iOS and Windows Phone have to offer us this year.
Because the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 are the best phones around and because they both run Android, that means we've dropped a third Android handset from this roundup (the Sony Xperia Z).
So now we have room for the Windows Phone 8-powered 925 and the iOS-based iPhone 5.
FutTv : 7DiXjlaO6m1gn
Not so long ago, if you weren't on an iPhone or a BlackBerry, chances are you were rocking an HTC Android device with a big clock on the homescreen.
But times change - and Samsung got busy with its Galaxy line, ultimately stealing the top Android spot from HTC and making HTC wince. But while iOS continues to have a big share, Nokia also wants to have a bigger say in the market - hence the metallic look to the Lumia 925.
Let's see how the handsets compare head-to-head on the core specification - now obviously doing this doesn't take into account user experience, which we can tell you is excellent on all four of these handsets now we've published our Hands on: Nokia Lumia 925 review.

Lumia 925 vs HTC One vs Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5: design and dimensions

Like the HTC One, the Lumia 925 goes heavy on the metal, though it still has a polycarbonate back available in black and white. The HTC One looks a little like the white iPhone 5, but it remains a stunning design and is a really excellently crafted unibody device.
YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=bSpVeESvSYk
The HTC One feels very solid in the hand, with dimensions of 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3mm, with a weight of 143g compared to the Lumia 925's thinner, narrower and shorter 129 x 70.6 x 8.5 mm and lesser 139g weight.
The HTC One is our favourite handset around at the moment, narrowly pushing out the Samsung Galaxy S4. This is definitely true of the design, where the Galaxy is second-best. It's similar to the all-conquering Samsung Galaxy S3 from last year, with a plastic design. Although thinner than the HTC One at 7.9mm, the Galaxy S4 comes in at 136.6 x 69.8 footprint. Indeed, despite the larger screen, the 130g S4 isn't much bigger than the S3.
iPhone 5
The slate or white-grey metallic iPhone 5 is amazingly light. it's 20 per cent lighter than theiPhone 4S, as well as beating all the opposition at 112g. Compared to that, you definitely notice the extra heft of the HTC One especially.

Lumia 925 vs HTC One vs Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5: processor

A beautiful phone can end up as a beautiful paperweight if the processor isn't up to task. This used to happen a lot - but has not been as much of an issue in the last year or two since smartphones started becoming seriously powerful.
HTC is right up at the top of the specification tree with the HTC One offering a quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. That's an excellent chip from the latest generation of ARM SoC silicon. Sadly the Lumia 925 doesn't quite live up to these heights with a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 MSM8960.
That's a quick chip, used in numerous handsets such as the Lumia 820 and 920 as well as some versions of the HTC One X. It's perfectly good enough for pretty much all uses.
S4
Apple's iPhone 5 only gives us a dual-core 1.2 GHz Apple A6, but you won't find many who complain of slowdown simply because it runs on such a sold OS.
The S4 features the Exynos 5 Octa 5410 (GT-I9500) in many territories, but for countries like the UK and US where 4G is around, there's a quad-core 1.9 GHz Snapdragon 600 version (GT-I9505). This remains the best in class.

Lumia 925 vs HTC One vs Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5: screen

Screen resolutions tend to inspire real one-upmanship among phone companies. Apple's launch from the old style to retina really was groundbreaking and set the bar. It's hard to make something that replicates that first impression again - hence why even on the 4-inch, 640 x 1,136 iPhone 5, Apple itself even, hasn't managed to top its 326ppi pixel density.
HTC One
HTC's made sure it can secure boasting rights here over the opposition. The 1,920 x 1,080 4.7-inch HTC One screen also uses LCD technology, but opts for Super LCD3 as a display and as a result performs so much better. It helps that its peak brightness is much higher (although beware of this munching your battery), but it also packs such an improved contrast ratio as well - far more than we've come to expect from an LCD screen.
Pixel-density-wise, that's around 469ppi. The Samsung's 5-inch display weighs in with a 441ppi and again it's Full HD. The new 4.5-inch Lumia sits below both of these though, sadly - not only does it not have a Full HD display (768 x 1,280 instead), it has a 332ppi pixel density.

Lumia 925 vs HTC One vs Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5: camera

The camera on all these phones is excellent - but there's a big difference between them all. The Samsung is way out in front with a 13MP sensor, while the Nokia Lumia 925 features an 8.7 megapixel shooter and the iPhone 5 an 8 megapixel version. But when it comes to the HTC One, you'll have to make do with a 4MP option.
YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=GAbGd8VlNlg
The HTC One takes things in a different direction, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. The 4MP UltraPixel camera is probably one that most of you are familiar with, but here's a quick overview: a 4MP sensor can have bigger pixels, which let in more light for an overall brighter photo - excellent in lower lights where you don't want a flash.
YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=mLazXhAB4rA
The image quality of all the Android and iOS handsets is excellent (see their individual reviews for more analysis), but we're really interested to see how the Lumia stacks up. It features advanced lens technology for grabbing low-light images.
Nokia Smart Camera mode is also a new addition to the handset, letting you snap 10 images at once and edit, animate and enhance pictures straight away with features such as Best Shot and Motion Focus. Nokia also announced that Smart Camera Mode will also be rolling out as an update to all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices.
YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=pTZ3em5U84k

Lumia 925 vs HTC One vs Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5: storage

Storage continues to annoy us, as HTC has obeyed Google's demand for there to be no expandable storage slot. Apple isn't a fan either as they want everything done through the cloud. And Nokia just hasn't bothered. So thank goodness for Samsung, who has retained a microSD slot up to 64 GB.
S4
Internal storage just doesn't go as far as it used to, so it's great to see Samsung sticking to its guns. The iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4 are available in 16, 32 and 64GB versions while the HTC One is available in 32 or 64GB variants and the Lumia 925 in 16 and 32GB.
The S4 and HTC One win the RAM race with 2GB, while the other handsets feature 1GB.

Lumia 925 vs HTC One vs Galaxy S4 vs iPhone 5: early verdict

While the Lumia 925's processor and RAM won't have too much impact on a great Windows Phone 8 experience, it's clear that this is a handset which falls behind in some key areas. There isn't a 64GB version available, for example. And while the pixel density and screen resolution would have been state-of-the-art eight months ago, they simply aren't now. We know that Nokia is really trying, while the camera enhancements look like they will produce some very good results. But while this is the top Windows Phone, it is some way from taking the smartphone crown. We'll let it onto the top table, mind.
